The estate extends across a hundred hectares of uncontaminated nature, just few kilometres far from the sea, right in the middle of the natural, historic and artistic beauties of Calabria region. The lodge is situated in the narrowest part of Italy, along the river Corace, in the territory which is the cradle of a thousand years old culture; the born place of ancient populations such as the Feaci, whom Ulysses met in his journey from the Tyrrhenian to the Ionian Sea in the attempt to avoid the straits of Scylla and Charibdis. The first traces of the farm date back to 14th Century. At first, it was part of the charterhouse of Serra San Bruno and then, in the 19th Century, it was transferred to the local legal authorities after the abolition of the so called “Cassa Sacra” (an institution aimed at the reduction of the Church possessions). The renovation started 30 years ago was laborious and demanding. These operations included the marking out of the access from the main road, the realignment of the estate borders and the terracing of the slopes where more than 50,000 Aleppo pine trees, native to this area, and other Mediterranean flora now grow. This vegetation, along with two olive groves, is the perfect place for long walks in the nature. The cultivations of durum wheat, barley, oat and spelt alternate in rotation with broad beans, peas, chickpeas, tomatoes and vegetables which are the ingredients of the healthy and tasty cuisine of Santarosa Lodge.
